Most of the things we own sit still most of the time. The drill in the basement. The travel cot under the stairs. The stand mixer behind the toaster. Fold In is a small attempt to let a few people share the things they already have, without turning sharing into a marketplace.
Three of us live within four blocks of each other. We borrow things constantly — a folding chair, a baby carrier, a Pyrex dish, a tarp, a pressure washer (just once, but it saved a weekend). We forget who has what. Things drift. There's always a moment where someone texts the group chat, "did anyone end up taking the…?"
We tried a shared spreadsheet. We tried a chat with pinned messages. We tried the obvious move — building a tiny app for ourselves. The tiny app slowly grew teeth: a request flow, then a handoff confirmation, then care notes. Friends started asking if they could try it. That's how Fold In started.
Every time someone suggested a feature, we asked one question: does this still feel like neighbors helping neighbors? A lot of obvious features didn't pass.
Small acts of care. A care note for the battery latch that sticks. A four-digit code so both people know the handoff happened. A gentle nudge two days before something's due, phrased like a friend asking, not a system threatening. A polaroid at return because it's just nice.
The opposite of a marketplace is a hallway closet that everyone you trust knows the contents of.
Three people, one part-time designer, two part-time engineers. We work on this in the evenings and on Sunday mornings. We have no investors. We will probably charge a small subscription for households eventually — but the core single-user experience will stay free, because charging neighbors to lend each other things is a strange business model.
We're in closed beta with about sixty Folds. The first thing we're working on is making sure no real-world borrow ends in confusion — the handoff ritual, the return ritual, the incident flow. After that, we're sharpening the everyday loop: the demo Fold for new users, the "what changed" strip, AI capture forgiveness, care notes everywhere. There's a roadmap and we move slowly.
